The history of New England is rich with female makers who have placed themselves at the center of society through innovative and creative work. Following in the footsteps of women’s rights leaders and activists, today’s women are reclaiming their role as makers through careers as musicians, designers, writers, and visual artists. Through art, women are reclaiming their powerful place in society.
As artists and feminists, we aimed to curate a show that surveys the work of emerging, female artists currently working and living in New England. We defined “emerging” as artists making art professionally or as a student for ten years or less. The artists included in Reclamation range from recent graduates to retirees and represent the next generation of female makers shaping New England’s creative scene.
Through Reclamation we aim to not only bring together artwork that explores issues such as empowerment, stereotypes, sexuality, motherhood, and self image, but the talented artists who conceive and create it. Featuring over 50 artists from a variety of backgrounds, we hope that Reclamation helps to build a community of artists and supporters who value and celebrate the women that enrich our society.
